Doyle NY’s October Auction of Prints Tops $900,000
Doyle New York held a successful auction of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints on October 27, 2014. With competitive bidding from the salesroom, the telephones and the Internet, the sale totaled $903,281, surpassing its estimate of $555,250-848,800. An exceptional 92% was sold by lot and 99% by value, and several new auction records were set.
EUROPEAN PRINTS
European prints included several Pablo Picasso prints and ceramics, including Jacqueline au Chevalet, painted and partially glazed white ceramic round plate, 1956 which sold for $28,125; several works by Marc Chagall, including La Chevauchee, 1970, color lithograph, 1967, $23,750; Salvador Dali, Space Venus, 1977/84, $17,500.
AMERICAN PRINTS
American prints were highlighted by Gustave Baumann, Zinnias, color woodcut, circa 1920, $3,125, and John Steuart Curry, John Brown, lithograph, 1939, $5,000.
CONTEMPORARY PRINTS
Contemporary prints featured works by Andy Warhol, including the color screenprints Turtle, 1985, $13,750 and Annie Oakley, 1986, which fetched a record $42,500. There was strong interest for prints by David Hockney, including Big Celia Print #1, lithograph, 1981, a record $40,625 and Hotel Acatlan: Second Day, color lithograph, 1985, $46,875. Other Contemporary offerings included Howard Hodgkin, Red Eye, hand-colored lithograph, 1981, which fetched a record $4,063; Tom Wesselmann, Nude and Mirror, screenprint, 1990, $10,000; Roy Lichtenstein, The Oval Office, color screenprint, 1992, $31,250; Donald Sultan, Red Poppies, color screenprint and collage, 2010, $3,438; and Jeff Koons, Balloon Dog (Blue), metallic porcelain multiple, 2002 which brought a strong $15,000.
