Civil War, RR, Incunabulum Coming up at National Book Auctions April 12
ITHACA, NY—National Book Auctions, located in Ithaca, NY, announces the launch of their next auction catalog.
This catalog features rare, antique and decorative books as well as select additions of ephemera and artwork. Impressive private collections include important scholarly works and multi-volume sets. Several lots offer desirable Civil War-related titles, both single volumes and sets.
Antique and rare books in this catalog feature numerous titles. Leading the earliest examples is an item of incunabula, the 1493 printing of "Seneca's Tragedies," produced by Matheu Capcasam (Matteo Capcasa (di Codeca)), in Latin. Additional early works include Ausonius' "Burdigalensis Opera," printed in 1669, the 1774 printing of Hawkesworth's "A New Voyage Round the World by Captain James Cook," with the fold-out map, and the 1784 printing of "Fairy Tales Containing the Stories of Cinderilla or the Little Glass Slipper Princess Fair-Star & Prince Cherry & Little Red Riding-Hood," which pre-dates the works of the Brothers Grimm. Other scarce first edition titles include the Burton's 1856 "First Footsteps in East Africa or an Exploration of Harar," produced with hand-colored plates and engraved maps, Reid & Eaton's "The Life of Andrew Jackson Major General in the Service of the United States," printed in 1817 with fold-out plates, and Leaming & Spicer's "The Grants, Concessions and Original Constitutions of the Province of New Jersey," first printed in 1758.
Several pleasing collections will also be featured. An estate library being offered includes a number of Easton Press fancy leather bindings, including special editions signed by important figures such as Desmond Tutu, Gerald Ford and John McCain. From several sources, this catalog includes rare Civil War titles and works relating to Abraham Lincoln. Additional collections feature decorative antique bindings, railroad-related, nautical, travel & exploration, early Americana, author-signed, modern first's, antique children's books, art history, and much more.
Found throughout this catalog are interesting offerings of collectibles, artwork and ephemera. Among the art lots are a bronze sculpture and an original drawing by Salvador Dali. Ephemera offerings include early maps & cartography, signatures of literary & historical figures, railroad-related, antique magazines, chromolithographs, sheet music, stamps, travel, original antique correspondence, antique photographs, and other genres. Collectibles lots feature original antique railroad locks and keys, collectible watches, a vintage Saks alligator handbag and various other items.
