Auction #118
HIGHLIGHTS:
Lot 1, Smith (Adam), AN ENQUIRY INTO THE NATURE AND CAUSES OF THE WEALTH OF NATIONS, London 1786, Fourth Edition. When it was published, The Wealth of Nations had no equal in terms of scope or depth, and it remains one of the rare works in its field to attain classic status.
Lot 4: Burchell (W.J.), TRAVELS IN THE INTERIOR OF SOUTHERN AFRICA... London, 1822-1824, First Edition. Burchell is notable for the quality of his observations which are evident in the precision and affectionate detail of his drawings. They reflect the nature of the man he was, a man dedicated to the truth in all its colour and beauty.
Interestingly another copy of Byrne' THE FIRST SIX BOOKS OF THE ELEMENTS OF EUCLID, London 1847, First Edition has surfaced (lot 14). This is an old library copy and unfortunately in poor condition. Nonetheless, as Mc Lean stated it is "one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century".
There are two editions of Sparrman's A VOYAGE TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE TOWARDS THE ANTARCTIC POLAR CIRCLE ROUND THE WORLD. The First English Edition, London 1785 (lot 9) and the First French Edition, Paris 1787 (lot 189).
There are variety of collectable Art and Art Reference Books, including GERARD SEKOTO, Johannesburg 1988, First edition. Sekoto's paintings of Sophiatown, District Six, and Eastwood, Pretoria are considered historical records of South Africa in the 1930s and 1940s.
Finally, this auction features various memoirs and exploits of big game hunters (such as Tony Sanchez-Ariño and Jorge Alves De Lima). They are either privately published or published by Safari Press and Amwell Press, both well known publishers of hunting books.
