Paul Destribats : une bibliothèque des Avant-gardes, partie III
Sale #18402
The third auction of Paul Destribats’ Bibliothèque des avant-gardes will resume the chronological overview of literary and artistic life, starting after WW2. The leading writers the last century are still well-represented, such as with the Dictionary compiled by Breton and Duchamp for the 1959 International Surrealist Exhibition.
The duo is also present through the Boîte Alerte, a true surrealist icon, with the suggestive Couple de Tabliers. Among the artists who worked with Breton, one can name Miró and his Constellations. The collection also contains Miró’s masterpiece, Éluard’s À toute épreuve.
Picasso, Braque, Masson or Arp are among those who complete this group, joined by a new generation of writers. Bataille is particularly well-represented with Histoire de Rats, with etchings by Giacometti and the autograph manuscript. Dubuffet, the leading figure of Art Brut, illustrated and crafted many books from the collection : Les Murs ; Matière et mémoire ; or one of his phonetic texts , Anvouaiaje.
Despite censorship striking Robbe-Grillet sadomasochistic L’Image, mentalities evolved and erotic works became more widespread. Bellmer’s work on the human body is present, through his Jeux de la Poupée or his illustrations of Sade. Women artists also gained recognition after the war. An album of poems and drawings by Unica Zürn sees her putting a new spin on the livre d’artiste. The collection finally features works by the lettrist movement, led by Isou.
