The Union is Dissolved: Broadsides and Americana to Auction

Cincinnati – Hindman will present the Collection of James Milgram, M.D. as the cornerstone of its November 3-4 American Historical Ephemera and Photography Auction. Dr. Milgram’s collection features one of the most significant offerings of broadsides to ever come to market. In addition to the 18th to 20th century broadsides, the collection also includes an impressive selection of ephemeral Americana and historical documents. Across the two-day sale, the 630 lots also include photography, militaria, imprints, manuscript material, and other ephemera dating from the 17th century through the early 20th century.

Dr. Milgram’s remarkable collection will be highlighted by the first Confederate imprint, The Union is Dissolved (lot 483; estimate: $25,000 - $35,000). This first edition broadside was printed a mere 15 minutes after the unanimous vote of the South Caroline legislature to secede with the bold proclamation, “The Union is Dissolved.”  Another lot expected to see great attention is the earliest and rarest Lincoln assassination reward broadside, $30,000 Reward. Description of John Wilkes Booth! (lot 455; estimate: $20,000-30,000). An illustrated recruitment broadside (lot 508; estimate: $3,000-4,000) entitled, Irish Brigade 2d Regt. to be raised in Philadelphia, seeking volunteers for Company C of the 115th Pennsylvania Infantry is another highlight.
