The New Wizard of Oz: Rare Book of the Week
The Wizard of Oz signed by Judy Garland
A 1903 edition of The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum signed by Judy Garland goes under the hammer in Heritage Auctions' Hollywood & Entertainment auction December 9-10.
The copy was presented to Diane Catherine, the daughter of Garland’s private tutor, and Garland’s lengthy handwritten inscription reads:
“For Diane - from what I hear, you must be a very sweet little girl. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Playing the part of Dorothy was such fun, and so realistic, that I feel as if I'm not Judy at all, but Dorothy Gale from Kansas. I'm looking forward to meeting you, and hope it will be soon. Always your friend, Judy Garland 'Dorothy'"
On the introduction page is a printed rendering of "Toto" with two ink paw prints of Terry, the female Cairn Terrier who played Dorothy's canine companion, and owner Carl Spitz's signature. Facing the dedication page, Bobbie Koshay, Judy Garland's body double, has inscribed:
"Hello Diane: I am that other girl your mummy told you about. I am 'Judy's Copy' and I sure have lots of fun trying to. Hope you enjoy the book. Bye now, 'Bobbie Koshay'".
The copy is additionally signed and inscribed by major cast members including Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Clara Blandick and Margaret Hamilton.
The sale also includea a signed handwritten letter from L. Frank Baum from December 1918 on his personal 'Ozcot' stationery in which he mentions his latest work, The Tin Woodman of Oz, his illness, and desire to continue writing Oz stories six months before his death. The letter reads: "Dear Roland, Am glad you still enjoy the Oz stories - It might have been a very good idea if the Tin Woodman had some tin bits - I have been very ill but am still writing Oz stories".
The items follow last year’s sale of the ruby slippers from the 1939 movie version of the book for $32.5m. The current auction features Margaret Hamilton’s screen-worn Wicked Witch of the West flying hat.
