Thornwillow Press Launch Kickstarter for Fine Press Charlotte's Web Limited Edition
Thornwillow Press is setting out to make the ultimate collector's edition of E. B. White's Charlotte's Web, featuring the iconic, original illustrations by Garth Williams in the first-ever fine press limited edition of the classic story.
Its Kickstarter campaign launched this week and explains how the project will feature beautiful editions, all made by expert artisans and available only in very limited editions in a range of deluxe bindings, from letterpress paper wrapper and full-cloth with a letterpress dust jacket to full Moroccan leather set with genuine cabochon gemstones. A few copies will be bound in a unique antique quilted binding and presented in a custom-made clamshell box.
For more than 35 years, Thornwillow Press has been handcrafting books made in its workshops in Newburgh, New York, including works by Toni Morrison, Louise Glück, and John Updike. Thornwillow volumes reside in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, and the White House. It still makes books by hand, letterpress printing every page on heavy archival stock.
A spokesman for Thornwillow said: "Like John Baskerville and Johannes Gutenberg before him, we offer our books by subscription in advance of production. The Kickstarter subscription platform follows in this centuries-old tradition, and in subscribing, you join a worldwide community of authors and artists, book makers and book
readers who together celebrate the written word."
