Winston Churchill's Desk Sold for $450,000
Winston Churchill’s desk from his Hyde Park Gate home in London has been sold at The Winter Show 2024, taking place at The Armoury New York for $450,000.
The desk was part of his private office, used in his post-war political career and while writing his Second World War memoirs. This office was afterwards repurposed as his personal bedroom, and the desk was next to him when he died there.
It is a 19th century George III-style mahogany pedestal desk, leather-inset rectangular top with moulded edge above three frieze drawers flanked by fluted canted corners, each pedestal with three drawers, also flanked by canted corners, on a moulded plinth. Expertly restored in places, the leather top still shows signs of use but it is in very good condition.
Offered by Peter Harrington, the desk is part of its wider selection of Churchilliana at the show including rare books inscribed by the former Prime Minister, an unpublished archive of correspondence from 1916, and one of his original oil paintings.
