Video Fridays: Eric Carle’s Angels
Beloved picture book author and artist Eric Carle passed away earlier this week at the age of 91. Carle is perhaps best known for his book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), the 50th anniversary of which we celebrated in our winter 2019 issue. But Carle’s output included over 70 children’s books, as well as illustrations and fine art. He also founded the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 2002. For more on his life and legacy, see here.
Posted last year, this two-minute video introduces viewers to a series of cardboard and found object collages of angels that Carle made late in life (beginning at age 87) and dedicated to fellow artist Paul Klee. The exhibition opened last summer.
