Spring Estate Sale at New Orleans Auction Galleries

The auction will feature “Living Art”: An Important Collection of Works by New Orleans Artists. The proceeds of the “Living Art” auction items will benefit the WLAE public broadcasting station. WLAE works to offer quality content and outreach to increase awareness of cultural and educational services that positively impact the lives of the people of Southeast Louisiana.

Artists in this special session include:  Alex Beard, Raine Bedsole, Dr. Bob, George Dunbar, Mitchell Gaudet, Alan Gerson, Thomas Mann, Steve Martin, James Michalopoulos, Terrence Osborne, George Rodrigue, Hunt Slonem, and Carlos Zervigon.

New Orleans Auction Galleries is also partnering with The Ogden Museum of Southern Art to auction a book of signed drawings donated by a patron to raise money for the museum. The book, Sherwood Anderson & Other Famous Creoles, is illustrated by the famous William Spratling, with introductory text by Nobel Prize-winning author and occasional New Orleans resident William Faulkner. The book is signed by 41 of the 43 luminaries featured and was used as an important source for the recently published Dixie Bohemia, by John Shelton Reed.

Notable auction items include:

• "Nude Abstract," a pastel and pencil on paper, signed lower right, float mounted, glazed, matted and framed, by Paul Ninas (American/Louisiana, 1903-1964).
• Glass "Macchia" Bowl, signed and dated in engraved script, by Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941).
• "Perspectives II," a silver gelatin print by Ruth Bernhard (American, 1905-2006).
• “Gold Luster,” a gilded and painted ceramic wall relief by Lynda Benglis (American/New York, b. 1941).
• A Chinese rhinoceros horn cup from the 17th century, carved as an open magnolia flower with leaves, branches and buds, with a fitted hardwood stand carved in the form of a fantastic rock.
• "L'Origine de L'Espace," a glazed, matted and framed color lithograph, 1971, by Man Ray (American, 1890-1976).
• A Chinese ivory carving from the early 20th century, depicting the standing figure of a warrior in armor.
• Louis XV-style mahogany and kingwood lady's desk from the early 20th century, the shaped top inlaid with three foliate-inlaid panels and a full brass banding.
