Over the Rainbow Song Contract and Mervyn LeRoy's Script for The Wizard of Oz to Auction
A range of items from MGM's movie The Wizard of Oz including scripts, contracts, and memorabilia including the ruby slippers will go under the hammer in Heritage Auction's December 7 Hollywood/Entertainment auction.
Among the lots is the original MGM studio-bound script belonging to The Wizard of Oz's producer/director Mervyn LeRoy. The draft 126-page typed carbon script, plus 15-page pink revision, reveals variations, such as an alternate ending and character details including Dorothy's teacher as Miss Gulch. Stamped by the MGM Art Department as a 'File Copy', the script includes vintage embellishments and LeRoy's personal credits.
The sale also includes original 1938 MGM song contracts for songs from the movies including for Over the Rainbow, If I Only Had a Brain, If I Only Had a Heart, If I Were the King of the Forest, The Merry Old Land of Oz, and Ding Dong the Witch is Dead.
Other highlights from the sale include:
- Anthony Yerkovich’s first draft of the Miami Vice pilot My Brother’s Keeper, more than 180 pages on handwritten yellow legal paper
- Robert Peak’s original mixed media poster artwork the 1975 movie Rollerball starring James Caan, Peak's original concept painting for the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan poster, and artist John Holmes’ original painting for the 1974 Pan paperback version of Peter Benchley’s Jaws published in the United Kingdom.
- Harold Arlen's final working manuscript for Judy Garland's The Man That Got Away from A Star is Born (1954).
- Dorothy's ruby slippers and the hat worn by Margaret Hamilton’s Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz
