Original Lucky Luke Artwork by Morris to Auction For First Time
For the first time, 50 original comic book pages drawn by Morris for his Lucky Luke series will go under the hammer.
The Christie's auction Morris: l’homme qui créa Lucky Luke on November 15 will focus on the work of Maurice de Bevere, better known as Morris, a key figure in the history of Franco-Belgian comics, known mostly for just one character which he created, drew and animated during his whole career.
The sale will be preceded by a public viewing at Christie’s in Brussels, Geneva and Paris. Estimates for each of the comic book pages vary between €20,000 to €70,000.
Very few of the pages designed by Morris between 1947 and 2001 have ever been seen and to date, no work by the artist has been offered at auction. Christie's describes the sale as tracing the growth of Morris as an accomplished artist.
The adventures of Lucky Luke were first published in 1946 under the title Arizona 1880. The first full-length album was published in 1947, followed by 71 others throughout Morris’s lifetime. René Goscinny wrote the script for almost half of his albums. The 50 comic book pages for sale come from dozens of different albums.
