First-Appearance Marvel Comics of Wolverine, Iron Man & The X-Men at Goldin
Goldin's December Pop Culture Auction will feature three first-appearance Marvel comic books of Wolverine, Iron Man and the X-Men.
The auction is headlined by the 1974 Marvel Incredible Hulk #181, the first full appearance of Wolverine, and the only appearance of Wolverine as John Romita designed him before an art error permanently modified his look. The issue, signed by creators Roy Thomas, John Romita and Stan Lee, is one of 11 of the top-graded issues, making it a truly rare collectors’ item.
Other origin and first-appearance books coming up for sale include the 1963 Marvel Tales of Suspense #39, the first appearance of Iron Man. This issue is graded 9.0 by CGC, with less than 1% of examples of this book achieving a higher grade. Also up for auction is the highly-graded X-Men #1 from 1963, where Professor X, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast and Marvel Girl are first introduced. The now-iconic cover features these heroes doing battle with Magneto, who also makes his first appearance.
