Leading the sale were two groupings of personal items that belonged to legendary actor Marlon Brando. Lot 140, A Collection of Brando’s Scripts, Letters, and Memorabilia for The Godfather achieved over four times its high estimate, selling for $100,313 against an estimate of $15,000-25,000. Lot 141, A Collection of Brando’s Scripts, Letters, and Notes for Apocalypse Now also sold for the price of $100,313, well over triple its high estimate of $30,000. In total, the sale was 88% sold by lot and 92% sold by value, realizing $1,076,731.
Successful results were seen by The Estate of Stanley Simon, a collection of early movie photographs and stills. The group, comprised of 111 lots, was 100% sold and achieved $492,766, a testament to both Simon’s diligent collecting throughout the decades as well as to the enduring appeal of classic Hollywood images. Bonhams will offer the remainder of Stanley Simon’s collection in the forthcoming online sale: The Estate of Stanley Simon, Part II, taking place June 20-29, 2021.
Bonhams’ Director of Entertainment Music and Memorabilia, Helen Hall, commented: “We are delighted with the results of this film auction, which proves the ongoing appetite for Hollywood’s golden age and beyond. Many of the lots offered were fresh to the market and captured the imaginations of both established and new collectors.”
