Here are the sales I'll be watching this week:
The Bonhams online sale Remarkable Women: Manuscripts and Memorabilia ends on Tuesday, April 2; the 55 lots include a large collection related to the author Armine von Tempski (1892–1943), including her manuscripts, letters, photo albums and other possessions ($60,000–90,000). The only known copy of Eve Adams' self-published collection of stories Lesbian Love (1925) is expected to sell for $8,000–12,000.
Christie's online Photographs sale ends on Wednesday, April 3. Among the 164 lots are William Eggleston's Memphis, 1971 ($250,000–350,000) and Untitled (Near Glendora Mississippi) c. 1970 ($100,000–150,000); Edward Weston's Pepper No. 30, 1930 ($100,000–150,000); and Irving Penn's The Hand of Miles Davis, New York, July 1, 1986 ($100,000–150,000).
Heritage Auctions holds a Comics & Comics Art sale on Thursday, April 4, in 1,555 lots. Action Comics #1 (1938) is expected to lead the way at more than $4.25 million.
At PBA Galleries on Thursday, 335 lots of Rare, Antiquarian, and Illustrated Books & Manuscripts, including a manuscript Book of Hours on vellum, use of Rome, about 1450 ($20,000–30,000); a presentation copy of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet (1924) inscribed to Harriette Fowler ($7,000–10,000); Hokusai's Fugaku Hyakkei could sell for $6,000–9,000. Nancy Willard's collection of decorated models of eggs signed by authors and artists is estimated at $5,000–8,000.
Bonhams New York sells 140 lots of Photographs on Friday, April 5, including Diane Arbus' 'Family on the Lawn One Sunday in Westchester, N.Y.' (1968), estimated at $80,000–100,000; and Edward Steichen's White Lotus (1939), which could sell for $70,000–100,000.
At Heritage on Friday, 538 lots of Historical Manuscripts. Lots include a 1952 letter about general relativity written to Einstein but heavily annotated by Einstein and returned to the author and a June 26, 1863 letter from Robert E. Lee about military logistics just before Gettysburg.
Also at Heritage on Friday, 1,855 lots of The Art of Disneyland, with a very wide variety of Disneyana in different formats.
On Saturday, April 6, Arader Galleries sells 165 lots, including Audubon's Carolina Parrot ($150,000–200,000); Common American Swan (also estimated at $150,000–200,000); and Ivory-Billed Woodpecker ($120,000–150,000); and two Maria Sibylla Merian watercolors, one of tulips, crocuses, and insects ($150,000–175,000) and another of a tulips, marigolds, and shells ($120,000–160,000).
