Archie Comics, Early Religious Books, and Klimt Plates: Auction Preview
A quiet week coming up in the salerooms, but here's what I'll be watching:
New England Book Auctions sells 223 lots of Literature, Graphics, Ephemera on Tuesday, August 29. A copy of Gustav Klimt's Eine Nachlese (1946) with thirty plates by Klimt is expected to lead the way, estimated at $3,000–5,000. Other lots include a copy of Robert Frost's North of Boston (1926), signed by Frost and with an additional signed holograph poem; and a copy of the Pennyroyal Press Wizard of Oz (1985) with illustrations by Barry Moser.
At Heritage Auctions on Thursday, August 31, The Art of Archie Comics & Comic Art, in 137 lots. Among the interesting lots are original art by Dan and Jim DeCarlo for a 1980 Hostess Twinkies ad which appeared as the inside front cover of Josie and the Pussycats #102, accompanied by a hand-colored reference guide and CMYK color films for the piece and several similar lots; and original cover art for Wilbur Comics #79 (1958).
Quinn's Auction Galleries sells 224 lots of Religious Rare Books on Thursday, including the 1500 editio princeps of the sermons of Bernard of Clairvaux; the first Estienne New Testament (1546); and the 1492 Nuremberg edition of Thomas à Kempis' Imitation of Christ.
