Antiquarianauctions.com is an online auction site dedicated to the sale of rare and out-of print books, maps & prints, documents, letters, ephemera and vintage photography.
Dealers and collectors worldwide have been selling and bidding on the site since 2010.
Only established booksellers who are members of major national trade associations such as ABA, ABAA, PBFA or SABDA or are of good standing in the trade are permitted to sell on the site.
Auctions are held every five weeks and run on the model of a timed auction for one week.
A preview of the auction will appear on the homepage two weeks before the auction begins.
‘By actively encouraging our sellers to consign non-Africana stock and hosting the site in the UK, we are attracting a growing international clientèle with over 50% of the site’s users being based in the UK, the US and the rest of the world. We are now able to offer an enticing selection of stock which will interest international as well as Africana collectors,’ says Paul Mills, director and founder of AntiquarianAuctions.com.
Highlights for Auction#39
Lot 181: THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE - FIRST SAMUEL JOHNSON EDITION
The Plays of William Shakespeare, In Eight Volumes, With the Corrections and Illustrations of Various Commentators to which are added Notes by Sam Johnson'. The first edition edited by Johnson and with his c.73pp. introduction. Outside of the Folio editions of Shakespeare, this is considered to be the most important edition of his plays and it forms the basis of modern Shakespeare scholarship. This is the scarce first printing of the first edition, distinguished from the later imprint of the same year by Johnson's preface being unpaginated and by the omission of the imprint of Longman from Vol.'s 1&2. 1000 sets of this issue were printed - some commentators say less.

Volume I bound in full blind tooled vellum with trimmed edges, volume II in quarter vellum with marbled paper sides (the paper is worn), with uncut edges.
‘Johannes Voet's Commentarius ad Pandectas, the leading institutional work in Roman-Dutch law, is also the most frequently quoted exposition of that legal system in the South African courts. The opening title of that magisterial work, however, has for the most part been unjustly neglected by our judges, scholars and law teachers alike. Apart from providing an exceptionally fine introduction to the elements of law and justice, this title reveals the imposing range of Voet's scholarship, which sweeps within its compass many ancient writings.’ Andrew Domanski, Fundamina, A Journal of Legal History, volume 19, Issue 2, 2013.
