Music and Antiquarian Books and Manuscripts
The sale contains a group of charming illuminated books of hours and an early edition of the Golden Legend in a contemporary German binding, along with Ptolemy’s Almagest of 1515, also in a contemporary binding. A more unusual work is Demetrios Doukas’s printing of the liturgy of John Chrysostom, and there is a copy of the 1544 Greek Josephus with wonderful annotations by a contemporary reader, with his dates of reading and his low opinion of Charles V. Manuscripts include letters by Goldoni, poems by Defoe and Charles Morris, and two Spanish cartas executorias. The English Civil War features in a group of proclamations and a manuscript account of the Scottish Kirk during this time. Scientific and medical works include the late seventeenth-century “naughty” handbook of procreation and midwifery, Aristotle’s Master Piece, and Valverde de Amusco’s anatomical handbook. The Music section features an important late seventeenth-century manuscript volume of 72 pieces for the five-course guitar and an extraordinary archive of 400 letters from Max Bruch to Ernst Rudorff.
