Freeman's Auctions - Chicago Timed Online Sale 6383: The November 14th Post War & Contemporary Art auction at Freeman’s is thoughtfully comprised of a diverse yet cohesive presentation of 57 remarkable paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs and prints with engaging and meaningful entry points for seasoned connoisseurs and emerging collectors alike. The sale is thematically anchored by imaginative and varied explorations of the classic subject matter of portraiture ranging from Gertude Abercrombie’s angular and affectingly awkward WPA era depiction of fellow artist Eddie Millman to Mickalene Thomas’ of the moment, complexly layered in composition and content The Inversion of Racquel #2, 2021; with stellar examples by Kehinde Wiley, Katz, Phillip Pearlstein, Fritz Scholder and Andy Warhol superbly bridging the artistic generational gap. Of further noteworthy importance in the auction are Mark Bradford’s sublimely tactile and topographically décollaged triptych, Untitled, 2007, a revealing standout from Sam Gilliam’s Black Paintings series Dorothy’s Mondays, 1977, a hypnotically contemplative genre synthesizing Jacob Lawrence gouache, a charming and charged British Modernist wild boar bronze by Elisabeth Frink, and an elegantly engineered Bernar Venet geometric theorem of a sculpture Two Arcs of 236.5° Each, 1988.

Also headlining the sale are two sophisticated, succinct, and significant single owner sessions: a tight seven lot run for a Distinguished Private Collection in Florida featuring slick and shapely showstoppers by Ken Price, Amy Sillman and Charline Von Heyl, and splashy selection of 11 works from the esteemed collection of Dr. Gary London, Washington D.C., including exceptional Pop Art prints by Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly, Christo, Tom Wesselmann, Mel Bochner and the aforementioned Warhol. We invite your eyes to enjoy all the good-looking lots and hope you experience as much joy exploring the offerings as we had assembling the sale.
