From Washington to the Wizard of Oz: 200+ Rare Autographs Including Presidents, Composers, Authors, Artists & Scientists
Lion Heart Autographs’ Fall 2023 auction, our biggest by far, is packed with rare, unusual and fascinating autographs across all subject areas. The many exciting highlights include: RAY BOLGER’S personal printed manuscript scores of “If I Only Had a Brain” and “Over the Rainbow,” used during the production of MGM’s 1939 classic motion picture THE WIZARD OF OZ, plus other original Bolger items include a pair of his tap shoes and two ties as well as is 14-karat gold and diamond watch inscribed to him on the caseback on opening night of the legendary Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, where Bolger was the headliner; a document secretarially signed by KING LOUIS XVI announcing the implementation of the Paris Peace Treaties that ended Britain’s war with the United States; autographs by presidents WASHINGTON, ADAMS, LINCOLN (ADS), OBAMA, JEFFERSON, MADISON, JFK, BUCHANAN (on his health), and NIXON (on his shingles) plus an original copy of the famous “Dewey Defeats Truman” newspaper which includes a picture signed by TRUMAN holding the newspaper; a slabbed signature of “KIT” CARSON; extremely rare ALS of America’s first chess champion, PAUL MORPHY; letter from the inventor of the “PAP” smear; a rare ALS of pharmaceutical company founder ELI LILLY; plus MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.; SHACKLETON; GAGARIN three days before his death; HOUDINI; GAUGUIN; FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. In music, our sale features two detailed letters by MENDELSSOHN; two extraordinary letters by PUCCINI; BARBER’S “Adagio for Strings;” a WAGNER letter mentioning his notorious Judaism in Music; a MARIA VON TRAPP letter to her Jewish publicist expressing disdain of a Jewish girl at her camp; a VERDI ALS accusing soprano Anna Bishop of bribing the press; musical quotations from DE FALLA; MEYERBEER; RAVEL; PROKOFIEV; COPLAND; and SOUSA; and excerpts of patriotic songs including “Home, Sweet Home” to “God Bless America.” Read an eye-witness account of YALE students beating up their professors in 1812 and go sailing with a WHALING LOGBOOK detailing a years-long ocean voyage. Just to round things out in case you need more, there is a letter by former president BUCHANAN about “the irregularities of my pulsation” and NIXON’S case of Shingles, something he observes he has in common with Hoover and Eisenhower, plus an ALS of LINDBERGH to his son about his boarding school’s “girl supply” and BERLIOZ to his son about the young man’s opium addiction.
