Auction 113 includes many scarce lots.
Lot 1 is very rare, Smith's Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa, in its original parts. Usually this is found bound in 3 or 5 volumes, finding it in the original booklets is the "Holy Grail of Africana Collecting". They contain 275 fine lithographic and 4 engraved plates by George Ford, 267 of them are hand-coloured and some are heightened with gum Arabic. They comprise Mammalia, Aves, Reptilia, Pisces and Invertebratae.
Also, Prisse d'Avennes' Oriental Album, Characters, Costumes and Modes of Life in the Valley of the Nile, Second Edition, London 1851 (lot 3). This book contains beautiful chromolithographic plates of people and costumes, and the way of life in the Valley of the Nile.
2024 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Winston Churchill (1874). This auction features, a circa 1917-22, Enameled Metal Advertising Sign for the Humorous Magazine “The Passing Show" depicting Churchill and David Lloyd George who was Prime Minister at the time (lot 8).
There is a monumental atlas, Goldmann's Atlas of the Witwatersrand and Other Goldfield's in the Southern Republic, showing the gold mines of the Rand. First edition, published in London in 1899 (lot 2).
For those interested in archives, lot 7 contains various sketchbooks and typed notes of Wesley Dougill (draughtsman, architect and town planner) concerning London after the Blitz [1919 - 1943].
Lot 20 is an original, Trooper's Lance Cap of the 9th Queen's Royal Lancer's from the Anglo-Boer war. The Lance Cap has a black patent leather skull and peak and brass rope effect waist. The sides are covered in black facing cloth with brass embellishments including a Victorian Crown rosette, 9 brass buttons & lion's head bosses.
