Napoleon Letters, Grateful Dead Postcards, Harlan Ellison Art at Auction

At Tajan on Tuesday, October 18, Livres Anciens et Modernes, Manuscrits, Autographes, in 224 lots. A 33-volume set of the Encyclopédie (1751–1767) is expected to lead the sale at €12,000–15,000. A 1515 Latin and French liturgical manuscript is estimated at €8,000–10,000. Two Charles Baudelaire letters, one from February 15, 1860 and the other from April 5, 1865, are each rated at €5,000–7,000.

Aristophil sale 52, Napoléon à Cambacérès, will be held at Aguttes on Wednesday, October 19. The 112 lots comprise letters between Napoleon I and the sometime Duke of Parma. Rating the top estimate is a 2–29 April 1807 series of letters written from Finckenstein Castle in Poland (€18,000–20,000).

Bonhams Los Angeles' online Music sale ends on Wednesday. The 94 lots include a tablecloth with doodles and autographs by the Beatles and Joan Baez used during a meal before the August 29, 1966 concert in Candlestick Park in San Francisco ($15,000–25,000) and a collection of nearly 100 Grateful Dead handbills and postcards from 1966 to 1995 ($8,000–12,000).

On Thursday, October 20, Forum Auctions sells The Architectural Library of the late Derek Gibson, Part 1. Among the 301 lots are a 24-sheet John Pine and John Tinney engraved map of London and Southwark from about 1749, estimated at £20,000–30,000. The first edition of Vitruvius in Italian (Como, 1521) is expected to sell for £15,000–20,000, as is Johannes Kip's Nouveau Theatre de le Grande Bretagne (1714–1716).

At Swann Galleries on Thursday, 314 lots of Fine Photographs. A 1936 print of the iconic Dorothea Lange photo Migrant Mother, Nipomo California is expected to lead the way at $100,000–150,000. It was previously in the collection of Romana Javitz, longtime curator of the NYPL's Picture Collection. A 1960s print of Ansel Adams' Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico is rated at $30,000–45,000. A portfolio of forty Civil Rights-era photographs by Danny Lyon is expected to sell for $25,000–35,000.

Potter & Potter Auctions sells Fine Books & Manuscripts on Thursday, in 589 lots. A presentation copy of the Bodley Head Ulysses (1937) is expected to fetch $50,000–60,000. A copy of the 1870 Lockwood octavo edition of Audubon's Birds of America in the publisher's binding could sell for $30,000–40,000, and a 1906 edition of Robert Browning's Poetical Works presented to Ernest Shackleton and the officers of the Nimrod is estimated at $40,000–60,000.

At PBA Galleries on Thursday, Americana – Travel & Exploration – Aeronautics – Maps, Prints & Views, in 446 lots. Sharing the top estimate of $15,000–25,000 are an official copy of the Japanese instrument of surrender signed on the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945 and a collection of 154 items containing autographs of anyone connected with the Watergate scandal. Six newspaper issues containing articles about the Lewis and Clark expedition are expected to sell for $6,000–9,000.

Heritage Auctions sells The Harlan Ellison Collection of Comics & Comic Art on Friday, October 21. The 108 items include the original artwork for a page from Watchmen #1 (1986) and a three-page sequence of graphite original artwork for Heroes for Hope #1 (1985).
